Elephants go thirsty

Presidential elephants and other wild animals in the Hwange Safari Lodge are likely to die from thirst as most of the drinking pans have run out of water.

Wildlife conservationists have accused Hwange Safari lodge management of neglecting the watering pans in the area where the special presidential herd roams.

The lodge, which is owned by Dawn Properties, is being leased by African Sun.

“Hwange Safari Lodge management have been absolutely irresponsible in providing water for the wildlife, specifically for the Presidential Elephants,” said a wildlife conservationist. “One of the key pans, Mpofu Pans, has been dug up for several years by volunteers to increase its wet-season water holding capacity.

The management could not bother to do that by themselves.”

The conservationist said the pan was left to go almost completely dry, before the lodge management started filling it with water this year.

“Presidential Elephant deaths are almost certain this year due to the operator’s neglect of the land surrounding the lodge,” he said.

Dawn Properties are trying to evict African Sun from the lodge. Repeated efforts to get a comment from Trynos Makiwa, the Hwange Safari Lodge General Manager, were unsuccessful.
