Environmental awareness

Environmental awareness is becoming a priority for media outlets with campaigns such as a recent anti-littering initiative demonstrating the media’s commitment to protecting the planet.

The awareness campaign was held under the theme, ‘Media Take Charge, Are You Involved?’ and was run by the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists Manicaland chapter in conjunction with Zimbabwe Environmental Journalists Association, the Environmental Management Agency, a local mining firm, the Development Trust of Zimbabwe and Green Zimbabwe.

It sought to educate members of the public on the need to minimize garbage dumping and littering, especially along the country’s highways.

ZUJ chapter chairman, Oliver Karuru, said the media played a vital role in disseminating information regarding climate change, which has brought with it food insecurity, environmental deterioration and diseases.

“We have taken it upon ourselves as journalists to be involved in the practical aspects of environmental management so that the communities can emulate and follow suit,” he said.
