French president Francois Hollande has pledged his country’s support for debt-ridden Greece but warned it must meet reform commitments. Greek prime minister Antonis Samaras says the austerity measures were too restrictive.

Three senior allies of former Ivory Coast president Laurent Gbagbo have been arrested signalling increasing tensions. The men have been accused of deadly attacks aimed at destabilising the country.

Authorities in the Bahamas have detained more than 150 illegal migrants from Haiti after their boat ran aground. It was caught in Hurricane Isaac buffeting North America.
Monk’s fire protest
Two Tibetan teenagers have died after setting themselves alight in Sichuan province. They are the latest monks to self-immolate outside a monastery to protest Chinese rule. About 50 monks have died the same way since 2009.
Deadly oil blaze
A fire at Venezuela’s largest oil refinery spread to a third tank on Monday. The blaze has killed 48 people since it began at the weekend. Half of the casualties were troops protecting the site.
UN staff jailed
Three United Nations staff in Burma have been jailed for inciting violence in the country’s west. Prosecutors said they promoted hatred between ethnic groups before a deadly riot.
Lucky escape
A powerful 7.4 earthquake which struck off the coast of El Salvador Sunday failed to cause any major damage or injuries. It occurred about 53kms underground causing only minor tremors at the surface, and a wave 10cms high.
Killer javelin
An athletics official has been killed during a youth javelin competition in Germany. Experienced adjudicator Dieter Strack, 74, was struck by a javelin in the throat on Sunday while measuring a throw.
Lion hunt ends
British police have abandoned their search for a lion believed to be on the loose in south-east England. Sightings of a large cat and roar were reported by residents in Essex . After a day’s search the hunt was called off after no tracks were found.
