The senior employees were suspended over allegations of corruptly awarding a tender to Shitazburg Enterprises to supply water pipes to the local authority. The company, however, failed to supply the water pipes after the council paid $330,000.

The three senior employees: James Makumbe (Chief Buyer), Ragis Dapi (Committee Officer) and John Maugara (Senior Engineer) were suspended on allegations of misinforming the city council about Shitazburg Enterprises’ capacity to supply the council with the water pipes.

“It is a shame that I am now being made a sacrificial lamb,” said one of the suspended officials. “Some councilors and senior managers who I cannot name at the moment were aware of all the procedures in awarding the tender to the company. It follows that if I am to be suspended for corruption, all the other senior employees should meet the same fate.’’

When contacted for a comment, the Mutare City Council Town Clerk, Obert Muzawazi, said: “We will not tolerate all the council employees who are alleged to have participated in an illegal transaction. As council, we are going to leave no stone unturned in weeding out corrupt employees.”
