Khupe challenges Zanu (PF)

Deputy Prime Minister Thokozani Khupe has challenged Zanu (PF) to take its amended version of the draft constitution to a referendum together with the Constitutional Select Committee approved one.

She was addressing journalists last week after holding rallies in her rural home area in Mbembeswana area in Matebeleland North. The two MDC formations led by Morgan Tsvangirai and Welshman Ncube have endorsed the draft constitution, insisting that it should go to a referendum.

“We are done with constitution and we are not going to move an inch on that. We have compromised a lot. Zanu (PF) should draft their own constitution and then we go for a referendum with the two constitutions. We have to let people decide,” said Khupe.

Khupe refuted media reports that she was dumping her Makokoba constituency in Bulawayo preferring to contest in her rural home. During the 2008 parliamentary elections, she stood in Makokoba constituency on an MDC –T ticket and defeated Welshman Ncube.

“People like Ncube are going around saying that I am running away from Makokoba because of the so called mass defections by my members, but that is not true. Makokoba is mine and I have invested a lot in that constituency. If they think I am moving out of that place they are completely lost, I am going to contest again and crush them,” she said.
