Lifeline for sex workers

An international non-governmental organisation, Development Aid from People to People, is helping former sex workers to find other means of employment. The women, many of whom are now living with HIV/Aids, are taught how to start income generating projects through DAPP’s initiative called Economic Empowerment and Enterprise Development.

Speaking on the sidelines of a workshop organised by DAPP, the women said they were grateful to be given another chance in life to start income-generating projects.

“We were helped to transform ourselves, and now we are earning an honest living,” said Maria Carlos.

DAPP Partnership Manager, David Karingamupembe, said the Women’s Economic Empowerment and Enterprise Development initiative was born out of the direct need to mitigate the risk factor in the spread of HIV.
