MDC supports SADC’s position on Zimbabwe

The MDC is pleased with the outcome of the 32nd SADC summit held in Maputo, Mozambique where Zimbabwe was urged to fully implement the Global Political Agreement (GPA).

In its communiqué, SADC implored Zimbabwe’s political parties to spare no effort in ensuring that they put before the people of Zimbabwe at the referendum a Constitution whose main focus is in the interests of the nation as a whole.

The resolution stops Zanu PF’s attempts to rewrite the draft Constitution, as it should proceed to the Second All Stakeholders’ conference before it goes for the referendum.

As a party, the MDC commends SADC leaders for not succumbing to Zanu PF’s demands of attempting to illegally rewrite the draft Constitution.

The ball is in our court as SADC has called for the expeditious implementation of the GPA and urged the immediate strengthening of the Joint Monitoring Committee (Jomic), in terms of the Livingstone decision, so that the SADC team can assist in creating an atmosphere conducive for holding free and fair elections.

The MDC has faith in the SADC appointed facilitator, Jacob Zuma and his capability to guide Zimbabwe to a free and fair election.

As the MDC, we do not want another farce and bloodbath like what the people of Zimbabwe experienced in 2008 when hundreds of MDC members and innocent citizens were murdered and thousands displaced from their homes.

The issues being raised by the people of Zimbabwe, the MDC, and SADC meet the basic requirements to enable the country to hold of free and fair elections.
