AccordIng to Euan Kay, the chief executive of Agriterra, the London-based agricultural company that owns Mozbife, plans are also under way to build an industrial slaughterhouse in Manica, which would be the only such installation in the country.
Kay said the slaughterhouse will possess state-of-the-art technoogy, in order to meet the quality demands of the countries to which Mozbife intends to export its products.
“This is a new project”, said Kay. “We have set up four laboratories and we shall process meat so that it can be exported to any country. We shall cater for the local market, particularly the megaprojects, and for Saudi Arabia and Dubai in Asia, as well as for Europe”.
The slaughterhouse should begin operations in September. It will have the capacity to slaughter daily 200 head of cattle and 600 goats. The total investment in the slaughterhouse is about 4.5 million US dollars.
Currently Mozbife has a herd of 5,000 cattle on farmland covering 11,400 hectares. Of this total, 700 head of “beefmaster” cattle were imported from South Africa for breeeding purposes.
Mozbife will also encourage cattle breeding by peasant farmers in various parts of Manica, who will be able to sell their animals to the company.
