No militia enumerators

Youths trained under the National Youth Service will not be allowed to act as enumerators in next month’s decennial population census, it has emerged.

Insiders within the national statistical agency, Zimstats, said the majority of youths currently employed as ward co-ordinators in the Ministry of Youth Development, Indigenisation and Empowerment submitted names for consideration but were turned down because they lacked the necessary qualifications.

Enumerators for the census, sources said, are required to possess at least a diploma.

‘‘The minimum requirement for the lowest grade of enumerators is a diploma and the majority of the youths do not have the qualification. Although they submitted their names, they will not be considered,” said a source.

Meanwhile, education officers at the Magunje District Office are under fire for favouritism in the enrollment of teachers scheduled to undergo training for deployment during the census.

The officers are reportedly favouring headmasters from Seventh Day Adventist church schools and other senior teachers and education officers.

“Whoever was given the chance to select these officials left room for manipulation as the majority of substantive head masters are from the Seventh Day Adventist,’’ said a source who works at the district office.
