Residents spooked by graveyard

Hopley Farm residents living next to the Granville Cemetery have called on the council to erect a wall between them and the graveyard. Residents who spoke to The Zimbabwean said the cemetery was too close to the informal settlement that is home to victims of Operation Murambatsvina.

“It is just weird to live next to graves, especially of people you do not know,” said Amai Jesca.

Another resident, Tichaona Jena, said some residents were disrespecting the dead by hunting mice in the cemetery and allowing their children to play on the graves. “The council must do something here because this is taboo in our culture,” said Jena.

Efforts to get an official comment from Harare City Spokesperson, Lesley Gwindi, were fruitless. The Managing Director of Mashonaland Tobacco Company, Ken Langley, has volunteered to erect a precast wall around the Pioneer Cemetery in Mbare.

“Langley, in support of the city of Harare’s endeavours for the proper maintenance of the cemeteries and the environment, had offered to erect a fence, hedge or durawall for Pioneer Cemetery and also place refuse bins along Simon Mazorodze Road,” Mayor Muchadeyi Masunda recently told city councillors.
