Even MDC councillors have failed and are now in the same bracket as Zanu (PF), their partners in the GNU. Paul Muchongwe (28) from Unit D in Seke said: “These representatives are a useless bunch only interested in acquiring as many properties as possible. They must know that we will deal with them through the vote now that the constitution is near completion.”
“The councillors, regardless of their political affiliation, should start packing because we are going to boot them out of their comfort zones. They have failed residents,” he said.
Another resident from Zengeza 4 said councillors had taken residents for granted and, just like their counterparts in the higher government office, had wasted resources, energy and valuable time concentrating on cheap party squabbles at the expense of the majority.
“We voted this young man from our area because we did not want infills to sprout everywhere. But the person that we chose was the first to take space meant for a crèche and build his house,” said the man who refused to have his identity published, adding that; “Instead of concentrating on improving service delivery, councillors think that being voted into office is a stepping stone to enrich themselves through corruption.”
The majority of women who spoke to this reporter expressed bitterness at the way council charges rates against the backdrop of poor service delivery.
“Our taps are dry six days of the week and we think it is a lame excuse for council to say that it is because of poor pressure. They know the problem and it boggles the mind why they are not rectifying it. Seke residents spend most of their time fetching water from boreholes. Those in the rural areas are much better because the high population rate for this town requires proper sanitation facilities,” said Farirai Dongora (54) of Unit M in Seke.
Another woman who identified herself as Mai Hwara from Seke said: “One councillor has a borehole at her house and when you go there asking for water, she will tell you that her borehole is not council property, showing that they are only concerned with their welfare.”
