Safari guide goes green

Local safari guide, Engelbert Karombo, has embarked on a voluntary tree planting project in schools here.

“My job as a tour guide has helped me to see the effects of climate change on the environment. In some areas you hardly see vegetation while in others, like Bulawayo, you can hardly enjoy fresh air due to pollution, overpopulation and the dwindling number of trees,” said Karombo.

Since the launch of the project earlier this year, Karombo has donated 100 trees to seven primary and secondary schools in Bulawayo.

“My capacity to increase the number of schools is currently limited because of lack of resources. I buy most of the trees from nurseries in town where prices are high. I am seriously considering the idea of starting my own nursery where I can grow my own trees and distribute them to more schools,” said Karombo.

As part of his environment awareness campaign, Karombo, in conjunction with other stakeholders, sponsored the Miss Zimbabwe Environment which was recently held in Bulawayo.

“If the whole world is busy engaging in global warning awareness campaign programmes why can’t we do that as Zimbabweans as well? Everybody should take part in this campaign,” he added.
