The council’s Director of Harare Water Department, Engineer Christopher Zvobgo, recently told journalists Harare City Council was battling with the raw sewage in the water.
“Norton Town Council is offloading raw sewage into Darwendale Dam. The quality of raw water has deteriorated so much that the Department requires a lot of water treatment chemicals. The cost of water treatment has risen from $2m to $3m,” said Zvobgo.
He said council was planning to install pumps that would divert the sewage to areas away from water sources. During a recent procurement board committee meeting, HCC admitted to having financial difficulties.
About a month ago, HCC celebrated the near completion of Firle and Crowborough sewer treatment plants that treat effluent from western, central, eastern and southern suburbs of Harare. The two sewer plants last functioned in 2003 when the Zimbabwe National Water Authority took over management. They were abandoned due to clogging and the council embarked on its resuscitation in 2010.
