Soccer boycott

EDITOR - Over the past couple of years social soccer teams have proliferated in Mbare. Over the last weekend in June, local Zanu (PF) officials demanded that every individual who wants to play on the municipal football grounds must register with them at Carter House. Two of the 15 teams presented themselves at Carter House, but they later joined the boycott organised by players who insist Zanu (PF) has no authority over municipal facilities.

The longer established church teams were not required to register with Zanu (PF) and the muslim team seems to be unaffected because they play on school grounds.

The impression given is that the new teams have drawn the youth away from Zanu’s kind of violent politics so that Zanu now feels threatened by peaceful football. – MAGARI MANDEBVU, by e-mail
