Warriors tumble to new low

Zimbabwe’s senior national team has suffered a major setback ahead of next month’s final African Nations Cup qualifier.

This follows its slide down the rankings by six places, according to the FIFA Coca Cola World Rankings released on Wednesday.

The Warriors fluctuation in the rankings table now leaves the team at a lowly 106th in the world.

The latest setback is attributed to an indifferent start to the qualifiers of the next FIFA World Cup scheduled for Brazil in 2014.

Zimbabwe were among the highest movers down the 206-team table.

A month ago, the team seemed to have turned the corner in the rankings but the six places leap to 100th world appears to have been a flash in the pan.

The Warriors are under pressure to qualify for the World Cup as will as next year’s African nations Cup neighbouring South Africa will host.

They take on Angola in a two-legged final qualifier in September.

Meanwhile, World and European champions Spain maintained its leadership of the rankings table.

Germany, England, Uruguay and Portugal follow closely to complete the top five.

Italy, Argentina, Netherlands, Croatia and Denmark follow in that order to hold on to the top ten positions.

Ivory Coast remains the highest ranked team in the continent (32 in the world) while Mexico, Uruguay, New Zealand and Japan lead their respective continents.
