Zim students for rowing champs

Three Zimbabwean students will be hoping to make the nation proud in rowing at the FISA World Junior Championships in Bulgaria later this month.

The Peterhouse pair of Michael Johnson and Murray Faber will team up with Saint Georges High School counterpart, Peter Purcell-Gilpin in their bid.

Rowing Coach Rachel Davies, spoke highly of her protégé, Purcell-Gilpin, whom she will meet in Bulgaria, after her current London Olympics assignment with Micheen Thornycroft. “Peter is a hard worker and I have no doubt that he will do well at the junior championships. He has a great future ahead of him. I believe that he will become one of the biggest names in the country’s rowing history,” she said.

The Marondera-based double skulls team of Johnson and Faber are also working flat out under the guidance of Craig Peebles.

“They are well prepared for the competition and know exactly what to expect there. Michael has been at the junior championships with Peter last year and he has a little experience of the races,” said coach Peebles.
