$10 million needed to pay enumerators

The NewsDay newspaper is quoting Finance Minister Tendai Biti as saying they are short of $10 million to pay enumerators, who carried out the recent Census.

He said the Census cost $40 million, but by the time it began they only had $16.1 million. Development partners had pledged $12.6 million but only $3.4 million of that had actually been received.

The whole exercise was disrupted at the beginning by soldiers and police who blocked the training of enumerators, insisting they were the ones who should be running the Census and receiving the payments.

At the end of the Census some enumerators had to be sent out again as there was a country wide outcry from people claiming they had not been counted. SW Radio Africa
