1,7 million get malaria

Manicaland province continues to be burdened by malaria with 1,7 million people infected with the disease in 2011, a health official said.

Speaking at the 2012 Manicaland Provincial World Malaria Day commemorations held at Chakohwa secondary school, Provincial Medical Director, Dr Tapiwa Murambi said Nyanga, Mutasa, Chipinge and Chimanimani were the worst affected by the disease. This is due to the area’s close proximity to the Mozambiquan border.

“Malaria is still a burden in the province with 1,7 million people affected last year alone. The figure is too high for the province,” said Murambi.

Murambi said of the four affected districts, Chimanimani was the worst. He added that his ministry, in conjunction with World Vision and Plan Zimbabwe, had been carrying out awareness campaigns. He urged villagers to seek early treatment when they suspect they have contracted malaria.
