The JOMIC held a meeting with villagers on Thursday and handed out transport allowances to those in attendance. When Kanoupandu was on his way home, a man accosted him with an axe, demanding he be given the money.

“The man followed me and said I had to give him the money I was given by the JOMIC. l told him l had nothing. He lifted his axe and that’s when l blocked it using my hand. I started running, he then axed me on my head and l fell down. I begged him not to kill me. I surrendered my cell phone to him to save my life,” Kanoupandu said. Kanoupandu said he recognised the young man as one of his neighbours.

“He took the phone and at that moment that’s when I recognised that it was Brian Kazingizi. I said nothing because I feared that he would kill me to destroy evidence so l kept quiet. The next day I then reported the case.”

Efforts to seek a comment from JOMIC and police were fruitless.
