Battle for boreholes

Residents here are locked in a bitter conflict with brick moulders over water.

Some unprotected wells are located in swamps where the brick moulders carry out their work – but residents also use these water sources, many of which were dug by the moulders.

During the day, desperate residents can be seen queuing at the unprotected wells while others will be doing their washing there as Chitungwiza continues to be dogged by persistent water cuts. “Our business depends on water but the problem now is that the water is almost running out due to the fact that some residents are coming here to fetch water. Sometimes we are left with barely enough to use.

“When we do not have enough water it means our business will be going down so at times we are left with no option but to refuse the residents access although they sometimes resist,” said Shame Mukumba, a brick moulder from Zengeza 4.

Service delivery failure has resulted in residents in most parts of the dormitory town going for several days without water. The Town Clerk, George Makunde, said the local authority was concerned about the water situation but declined to comment on what efforts were being made to rectify the situation.

“We are looking into the situation but I will only be able to comment next week because we will be going for a workshop where we are going to discuss the water issue as well as strategies that need to be put in place to address the situation,”said Makunde.
