Chief Chirumanzu probed

Chief Chirumanzu has been put under investigation by the local government ministry following reports of corruption put forward by his subjects. Allegations against him include abusing fines paid at his customary court.

“There are things which were being talked about concerning the chief but I am yet to look at current papers so that I am updated,” said Provincial Administrator Cecilia Chitiyo.

A source close to the matter told The Zimbabwean that investigations were underway and the chief had been ordered to stop all operations.

“Many people also had their compensations to local people they would have wronged against, consumed at the chief’s homestead instead of being delivered to the victims,” said one of the chief’s subjects.

Other sources said the probe was political, and aimed at ousting the chief, who had become an embarrassment to Zanu (PF). “Traditional leaders are the backbone of Zanu (PF)’s rural support – so the chief’s corruption was becoming political suicide for the party,” said the source.
