Council employee fined

A Mutare rural district council employee who was recently arrested for illegally reconnecting Zesa cables at his home was slapped with a 60 day jail term with an option to pay a $100 fine.

Harunashe Nengoma of Zimunya appeared before Mutare magistrate Daniel Shumba facing charges of contravening section 2 (3) (a) of the Electricity Act. Nengoma pleaded guilty to the charges.

Prosecutor Nelson Makunyire told the court that in June this year Zesa officials disconnected electricity at the accused’s house over non-payment of bills. However, Nengoma illegally re-connected power cables to his house.

Zesa officials noticed an anomaly during meter readings and carried out an investigation. It was discovered that the accused had tempered with the meter by illegally reconnecting the cables.

Shumba said the accused had no right to reconnect the cables and deemed the illegal connection of Zesa cables a very serious offence. Zesa has been lobbying the courts to pass deterrent sentences to those caught tampering with its properties to curb acts of vandalism.
