CSC owes Bots for cattle

The Cold Storage Commission has failed to pay the Botswana Meat Commission for cattle infected with foot and mouth disease acquired under the Botswana-Zimbabwe cattle slaughter deal.

According to Botswana’s Voice newspaper, farmers in the country have since stopped supplying BMC with their cattle because they are owed money by the CSC.

“Farmers are now looking for alternative markets. They cannot slaughter more cattle because Zimbabwe still owes them money,” said Simon Bojosi, the chairman of the North West Integrated Farmers Association.

In July last year, the Botswana government engaged CSC to assist in slaughtering cattle infected with foot and mouth in order to curb the spread of the disease.

Under the deal CSC was to remit a percentage of the income gained to Botswana. The deal saw BMC supplying CSC with 1 000 cattle on a daily basis.

Following the collapse of the deal, workers at CSC told ***The Zimbabwean that the situation at the company was as bad as it had been before the formation of the inclusive government.

“We are no longer getting our salaries on time. There is virtually no business taking place at the company,” said a worker who refused to be named.
