Dutch deny Copac manipulation

The European Union and countries that provided funds to help Zimbabwe write a new constitution did not do so in order to manipulate the process, says Netherlands Ambassador Barbara Joziasse.

The diplomat told The Zimbabwean on the sidelines of a handover of projects funded by her country that the European countries remain committed to seeing a successful new constitution containing what Zimbabweans want.

Her words come at a time when hardliners in Zanu (PF) have accused the EU of influencing some ideologies contained in the Copac’s draft document.

Tsholotsho legislator Jonathan Moyo said the draft constitution should be rejected because the UNDP had manipulated the document on the basis of financial muscles. Joziasse challenged such views saying “Those who say the EU countries manipulated the writing of the new constitution by smuggling European ideologies should substantiate those views.”

She said the new constitution was financially supported by European countries because it was viewed as a step in the right direction.

“We will all be upset if the three political parties involved abandon the exercise,” she said, adding that “It is surprising to note that Zimbabwe is on top of the list of countries enriched with natural resources yet on the other hand is at the bottom in ratings of nations with good human rights records,” she said.

The projects landed over by the Dutch focus on improving community health delivery through addressing the shortage of access to clean water and sanitation.
