Farmers resort to shift cultivation

After failing to access fertilizer, farmers here have resorted to shift cultivation. The farmers, who said they owned up to 100 hectares of land each, said the only way they could reap a decent harvest for the next season was to farm on virgin land. “For the past years we have been struggling to get inorganic fertilizers and the best thing for us to do is to try virgin plots that are naturally fertile,” said Admire Mheta, one of the farmers.

He said this year they were relying on maize from the Grain Marketing Board under the grain loan scheme as their yields were poor. “Our fields are exhausted and are no longer conducive for farming. If we could get fertilizers like before it could have been better. So, we have started clearing other patches of land where we can get fertile soil.

In the past, this has worked very well,” said another farmer. The government promised to ensure farmers were well prepared. Agriculture secretary Ngoni Masoka told The Zimbabwean: “Farmers will soon be getting agricultural grants in order to increase agricultural production.”
