Crisis worsens
More than 305 people died in Syria on Wednesday marking the deadliest day in the 18-month conflict. UNHCR’s chief coordinator Panes Moumtzsis said it is possible 700,000 refugees could be living at neighbouring borders by the year’s end.

Mars ‘riverbed’ find
NASA’s Mars rover, Curiosity, has discovered signs of an ancient river on the Red Planet. The smoothed pebbles and rocky outcrop are similar to geological forms found on earth. Scientists say the liquid would have moved “vigourously”.
Filmmaker jailed
The filmmaker responsible for an anti-Islam video which caused riots across the Muslim world has been jailed in the United States. Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, was ordered to return to jail after breaching his probation after fraud convictions.
Deadly crash
Tourists are among 19 people killed when a small plane crashed while flying to Mt Everest in Nepal. The aircraft crashed less than kilometre. The pilot tried to land when it caught fire. It is the sixth fatal plane crash in the country in two years.
Kismayo control
An African Union force has taken control of the major parts of the southern Somali city of Kismayo, the last Islamist hold-out, the Kenyan military says. The operation was designed to wrest control of the city before new Somali leadership takes power.
Hajj anger
All Hajj flights to Saudi Arabia from Nigeria have been halted after authorities in the strict Islamic kingdom detained 170 women who arrived for the annual pilgrimage without male escorts. A delegation has been sent to free the women.
Speaker pulls out
Russia’s parliamentary speaker has accused members of a European parliamentary forum of Russiaphobia after pulling out of the Strasbourg meeting. Sergei Naryshkin was offended by a motion critical of Russia’s electoral and judicial system.
Footage removed
The president of Internet giant Google Brazil has agreed to remove a contentious video attacking a politician after he was detained by police. Fabio Jose Silva Coelho announced the decision after his arrest and a judge ruled the video slanderous.
Snake shock
An Australian teenager was in a stable condition in hospital after being bitten on the arm by the world’s most venomous snake near Sydney. Police are investigating how he came to be bitten by the animal, which can kill 100 men with a bite.
