Mass jailbreak
About 130 Mexican prisoners, jailed in a prison near the border with America, have escaped from jail through a tunnel. Guards at the Piedras Negras jail are believed to have helped. Up to 140 prisoners escaped in 2010.
Occupy returns
More than 100 people have been arrest in New York during rallies to mark the first anniversary of the Occupy movement. The protests against corporate greed spread across the world. About 1,000 attended the gathering, much less than last year.

The closed corruption trial against former Chinese policeman Wang Lijun, who sparked one of the most damaging political scandals, has begun. He faces jail for telling the US the wife of a high-ranking politician killed a British businessman.
Deadly blast
As many as 12 people were killed when a suicide bomber blew up a mini-van carrying foreign workers in the Afghan capital, Kabul. Initial reports suggest the bomber was an 18-year-old woman. The nationality of those killed was unclear.

Attackers identified
Libyan authorities have identified 50 people they say were involved in planning and executing an attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, killing the ambassador. The government says it was planned months in advance and involved foreign groups.
Prisoners released
The Burmese government has pardoned and released 500 prisoners, including an unknown number of political detainees. The release comes a week before president Thein Sein travels to the United States, which has been pushing for the releases.

A UN report has found coca production in Bolivia has fallen significantly – spelling trouble for the cocaine trade. The country is one the biggest exporters of cocaine, but growth of the drug’s raw ingredient dropped 12 per cent in 2010.
Weapon worries
Iran has accused the world’s nuclear watchdog of being “infiltrated by terrorists” as it continued to ignore demands to stop its atomic production regime. It came as Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Iran is a year from having a bomb.
Executions halted
The Gambian president Yayah Jammeh has put a moratorium on the execution of all death row prisoners. It comes amid international pressure to stop the practice after several in August. However, he said it could resume if the crime rate rises.
