Violence escalates

Children and police officers are among 30 people killed in fresh ethnic clashes in south-east Kenya. The violence in the Tana River region stems from a long-running dispute over farming land. Over 160 homes were also destroyed by fire.

Terror leader killed

On the eve of the 11th anniversary of the 2001 terror attacks on New York, Yemen’s defence ministry has confirmed Said al-Shihri, the deputy leader of Al Qadea in the Arabian Peninsula has been killed. Six terrorists with him were also killed.

Detainee death

American officials have confirmed a terrorist detainee at its Guantanamo Bay base died last weekend. It brings to nine the number of prisoners to die at the facility since 2002. Details of the deceased would be released after family were notified.
