Gweru owes ZESA $7m

The City Council here went for almost a month using a generator to power its operations at Town House amid revelations that ZESA cut off supplies due to a $7 million bill.

Sources at GCC reveal that power was only reconnected last week when the two service providers reached an agreement on how to settle the bill. The council went for three weeks without power but was reconnected when it approached ZESA with $20,000 in part payment.

ZESA spokesperson, Fullard Gwasira could neither deny nor confirm the amount owed but said every individual or organisation not using prepaid meters owed the council money. “I cannot disclose or discuss a client’s bill in the media as this is private and confidential,” he said. “But one thing you should know is everyone who today is using electricity without prepaid meters owes us money.”

ZESA has in the past been crying over the $350m it is owed by its customers, including government.
