Journalists take corruption head-on

Two journalists took to the streets of Harare on Tuesday, distributing anti-corruption flyers before invading the Registrar General’s offices where they gave the flyers to passport applicants lining up at Makombe building in the city.

The two scribes, Terry Mutsvanga and Regis Chingawo are co-founders of a civic organisation dubbed Coalition Against Corruption (CAC).

“Creating a corruption free generation begins with you,” read some of the flyers that the two journalists distributed.

“We are saying we are tired of reporting about corruption issues everyday. May someone out there hear our voices. Stop bribery at police road blocks. Stop corruption in political offices,” said Mutsvanga, who is the director for the organisation.

Chingawo, who is the National Coordinator of the scribes’ organisation against corruption, said they made a decision to actively participate in waging a war against corruption.

“It is a decision we made as journalists to resort to tackling corruption head-on than only fighting through the barrel of a pen,” said Chingawo.

When the pair arrived at the passport offices, cops on guard could not help, but just looked on as anti-corruption flyers were dished out to the lining up passport applicants.

Meanwhile, a handful other journalists who were a supposed to join in the anti-corruption calls backed off at the last minute, fearing victimisation by the police.

The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists Secretary General, Foster Dongozi said journalists were also being affected by escalating corruption in the country.

“ZUJ applauds the journalists for braving the storm and opting to take the bull by its horns in tackling corruption head-on,” Dongozi said.
