Moroka Swallows coach Zeca Marques has applauded Warriors right-back, Gilbert Mapemba, for sterling performances in the opening games of the ABSA Premiership season.

The Dube Birds have enjoyed a purple patch so far this season, which has seen them storm into the finals of the R8million MTN8 tournament and become early favourites for the league championship. Marques revealed in a recent interview that the run was partly because Mapemba had put on a sterling individual performance on the right flank.

“Mapemba has been a vital member of our winning team and he has really contributed to most of our wins so far,” said Marques. “We are building our team around our wings and with him being our right wingback, I am happy so far with his performance and hope that he will consolidate his form.”

Mapemba joined the resurgent Soweto giants from CAPS United last season, after he impressed former coach Gordon Igesund and Marques, then the assistant coach. He has featured in many games for Moroka Swallows and remains hopeful of starring for Zimbabwe once again.

“Hard work and determination has helped me play regularly for Swallows. I’m also privileged to be playing with quality players, who have made it a bit easier for me. I am already challenging for a position in the senior national team. I respect the coaches’ decision and if I get that opportunity, I will surely represent my country with great honour and determination,” said the player, who also starred for Lengthens and the national Under-20 side
