Marange, a former trade unionist and veteran MDC politician, was acquitted last Wednesday, as the prosecution found no evidence linking him to the arson charge.
He was arrested last February together with party youths, Charles Ngwena, Richman Kanonge, Brian Phiri, Shown Chinhayi and Omega Kutsaru, on charges of undermining the office of the President by setting his picture on fire. The charges were denied by the accused.
Marange was acquitted by Magistrate Edwin Mareche, following an application made by Human Rights and defence lawyer, Makiyasi Mandebele, that the six be removed from remand as the state’s evidence was ‘shaky’.
The trial continues this month.
