With his team struggling to find the net, Hunt told reporters that he was keen to sign the former Zimbabwe captain but is disappointed by the player’s sudden disappearance from training.
Supersport are sixth on the league table with seven points from five games and Hunt expressed his need for Benjani’s firepower.
"We needed a player of his calibre in the team. We were still looking at him and were keen to bring him on board,” said Hunt.
“However, he has disappeared and I am disappointed," added Hunt after his team played a goalless draw against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Tshwane Derby Wednesday.
Mwaruwari who had made clear his intentions to join Supersport could not be reached to shed light on why he has had a change of heart.
Since his arrival from England where he played for such clubs as Manchester City, Portsmouth, Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers, Benjani has been a subject of speculation with links to Kaiser Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Jomo Cosmos.
Mwaruwari has indicated that he still has two more years of club football before he calls it quits revealing that he would prefer a return to South African football where he first played for Jomo Cosmos before moving to Switzerland to join Grashoppers Zurich.
The striker has retired from international football and in July staged a Testimonial match which attracted a very huge crowd.
