Harare City Council spokesperson, Leslie Gwindi, told The Zimbabwean that they had been carrying out an extensive programme ahead of the wet season, in order to prevent accidents.
“We are aware of the health hazards that are posed by such a situation but we are working on rehabilitating the drainage system and open pits. People should avoid dumping litter in drainages and open pits because we will have many pipe blockages,” he said.
However, angry residents blasted the council for not putting the interests of the people at heart.
“The cleaning and repairing of drainage pipes is something that could have been done months back. We are almost into the rainy season and the council has done nothing. Worse still, some of the holes in town were dug by the council and just left unrepaired,” said a man only identified as Churu.
