South African political parties, including the ruling African National Congress, joined hands with the Swaziland Solidarity Network this week, to complain over the recent imprisonment of Amos Mbedzi, a South African sentenced to an 85-year jail term on terrorism charges, following a botched bomb attack on King Mswati III.

Chinese support

Mozambique and China recently signed two cooperation agreements worth nearly $25 million, for the funding of projects yet to be identified.

About $9.4 million was given as a loan, while the remaining $14.3 million was a donation, according to Radio Mozambique.

Victor Borges, the Minister of Fisheries, said the money would develop infrastructure as part of the fight against poverty

Malawi in bad shape

The majority of Malawians strongly feel their country’s economic conditions are bad, with shortage of cash being the most endemic, according to a recent Afrobarometer survey. Respondents to the survey said they were generally optimistic about the future. One in two people thought the country was going in the wrong direction, two months after President Joyce Banda took over power.

Zambian probe

Zambia’s Home Affairs Minister, Edgar Lungu, has told police to probe the cause of a clash between suspected Patriotic Front cadres and their UPND counterparts at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on Saturday, and arrest the culprits.

PF cadres wanted to manhandle UPND’s William Banda during the requiem mass for Betty Kaunda, wife of President Kenneth Kaunda. The PF members accused Banda of being a violent man who should not be present at the funeral. Kaunda suddenly fell ill and the church service was cancelled.
