Roaming donkeys out of hand

Residents of high density suburbs are up in arms with cart operators who leave their donkeys to roam the streets at night, causing accidents.

Business has been brisk for the operators selling firewood, vegetables and garden manure since the introduction of electricity load shedding.

“We are tired of donkeys roaming our streets at night. They have caused a lot of accidents. Our streets are littered with donkey droppings. The police and the city council should surely do something before the situation gets out of hand,” said Mike Sibanda, a resident of Pumula suburb.

Another resident, Caleb Hlongwane, said the donkey operators normally bring their goods during the night during the night to avoid arrest by the police. Some of the operators stay in plastic shacks near council beer halls.

“Most of the cart operators have established customers to whom they sell firewood and vegetables on credit and cheaply. They do their business round 5 am to avoid detection by municipal police,” said Hlongwane.

The secretary of the Bulawayo United Residents Association (BURA) Samson Moyo said his organisation had on several occasions approached the council about the issue and nothing has happened.
