The prime minister had originally planned his marriage to be consummated through a white wedding.
That was before his ex-lover, Locardia Karimatsenga Tembo stormed the courts seeking to stop it, insisting that she was still married to him under customary law.
Tsvangirai ended his love relationship with Tembo last year, saying the relationship had irretrievably broken down.
Harare Provincial Magistrate, Munamato Mutevedzi on Friday, 14 September, revoked a marriage licence he had earlier issued to Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and fiancé Elizabeth Guma (nee Macheka).
Speaking in an interview, Luke Tamborinyoka, the Prime Minister’s spokesperson said the premier successfully conducted traditional nuptials on Saturday.
“The Prime Minister has traditionally married his wife. What has happened is that the Macheka family officially handed over Elizabeth as a wife to the Prime Minister. The ceremony was presided over by a Catholic Bishop, Father Patrick Makaka,” Tamborinyoka said.
He added that several dignitaries from southern Africa, among them the Prime Minister of Lesotho, attended the wedding.
Thousands of MDC-T supporters converged at Glamis Stadium in Harare for a public celebration with their leader.
Tsvangirai was defiant over the cancellation of his marriage licence.
“A man is not given a wife by the courts; not even by newspapers. I got this wife on my own and mine she shall be, till death do us part,” said Tsvangirai.
MDC-T National Organsing Secretary, Nelson Chamisa ,who was also the Director of Ceremonies, said they were happy that the two married.
“The thing is that we are happy and we are going ahead celebrating our mother and father (Tsvangirai and Elizabeth).”
