A desert in the making

EDITOR - Despite efforts to manage and care the environment for today and future generations in Zimbabwe, everything seems to point to accelerated desertification. Veld fires have destroyed most of the savannah. The severe frost had a share of the hyped 10 million trees planted. With no alternative source of energy, deforestation is going on unabated.

Today, one big tree chopped down affects movement of air and rainfall patterns within a radius of 20km. Bush encroachment is competing with grass. Haphazard sand mining, stream-bank cultivation and destruction of the sensitive wetlands have led to siltation of rivers and dams at an alarming rate.

The desert phenomenon of wind carrying dust, sand particles and litter as in the Sahara is not uncommon. As for government, no-one is listening. For local authorities, it is an overwhelming task – M. Muda, Harare
