Acceptable levels of violence?

EDITOR - Addressing his party’s Central Committee recently, President Robert Mugabe is reported to have said “If there is a fight in one place or the other, that does not mar the general peace”, a statement that is likely to be used by his people to unleash violence in areas where the party has lost ground, especially in the rural constituencies that Zanu (PF) lost in the last parliamentary elections.

The democratic forces should take heed and challenge Mugabe to rein in his violent supporters. For a President of a country to tolerate any level of political violence is unheard of. Interestingly, the Zanu (PF) perpetrators of the violence that has been recently reported, even where they have been identified, have not been arrested, giving credence to the speculation that Mugabe is conniving with the police not to arrest perpetrators of violence in selected areas and then try to convince the SADC facilitation team that violence is only restricted to a few areas.

Meanwhile, innocent officials of parties opposed to Mugabe, mostly those from the MDC-T have been arrested, most of the times to be released without being charged of any wrong-doing.

Mugabe’s statement shows he has no regard for human life. Imagine what the people who are directly affected and their families feel hearing Mugabe say what has been done to them doesn’t matter, as long as there is peace in some parts of the country. A President of a country must be concerned about the plight of every single citizen of Zimbabwe, and should strive to ensure that every individual’s rights are not violated.

Mugabe never seems to care what legacy he is leaving. Come on peace-loving Zimbabweans, let us push the merciless tyranny out of power at the next election. – Benjamin Chitate, New Zealand
