Amnesty International reaction to Cynthia Manjoro bail

Noel Kututwa, Amnesty International’s southern Africa director said: "Amnesty International welcomes yesterday's granting of bail by the High Court in Harare for Cynthia Manjoro following over a year in custody facing murder charges. The testimony by a State witness, Stephen Manjoro, exonerated Cynthia revealing that she was arrested to bait another suspect who was her friend."

"Amnesty International believes that some, if not all, of the 31 detainees, are potential prisoners of conscience arrested simply because they are MDCT activists living in Glen View. We are concerned that the death of a police officer is being politicised and that his family may never get justice or know the truth about how he died because of what appears to be an attempt to politicise investigations and the trial."

Some of the detainees have spent over 17 months in custody.
