Apostolic abuse: Minister

Apostolic and Zionist church elders have been accused of disrespecting the rights of their children by the Deputy Minister of Health and Child Welfare Douglas Mombeshora.

The minister said it was high time the church embraced the conventional life that is prescribed in the bible.

He made the announcement last Friday when addressing the first ever Union for Apostolic and Zionist Youth Congress in Harare.

The meeting aimed to craft resolutions that prevent child abuse, HIV and to promote active involvement of youths in all aspects of life.

“Recent research proves that the apostolic children are the most vulnerable in the country educationally, socially, economically and health wise,” said Mombeshora.

“Children are not immunised, girls below 18 years are betrothed to polygamous old men, most of them do not have birth certificates and some do not attend school due to poverty.”

Mombeshora welcomed the youth congress as a groundbreaking move.

UNICEF sponsored the assembly that drew participants from Mashonaland Central, East, West, Manicaland and Harare provinces. Bulawayo province is this week expected to host a similar congress targeting apostolic youths from the southern provinces of the country that include Masvingo, Matabeleland North, Mat South and Midlands.

UNICEF Gender Advisor, Anna Mutavati, said her organisation was concerned when they received calls from the churches’ youths.

“We visited Seke apostolic children between the ages of eight and 18 who pleaded with us to come and teach them about HIV and AIDS,” she said.
