Best of the Best – Kevin Maseko

Kevin Maseko and his brother, Fortune, sunk many teams when they played for Tongogara and switched to Mutare-based Buffaloes. The former striker also played for Highlanders juniors and South Africa’s Real Rovers.

My Best team

Even though I played only at junior level and the reserve side, Highlanders remains the team that gave me my first real chance in football. They moulded me into the great player I later became.

My Best coach

Ishmael Meki, who coached me at Tongogara in 2005. He plucked me from an amateur club, Presidential Guards Stars.

My Best match

It was a relegation play-offs game in which we beat Zimbabwe Saints 3 – 1 with Tongogara, with me scoring a brace. That match is still on many people’s lips and even today, some still stop me on the streets to talk about it.

My most memorable goal

It was a volley I scored against Masvingo United in 2005. I struck it from outside the penalty box. It won us the league game.

My Best Stadium

Gaths Mine in Masvingo – an underrated pitch, but with a turf of world class standards. It used to be well-maintained.

My Best Zimbabwean midfielder

Benjamin Nkonjera was the best midfielder ever produced – he was among the best in Africa.

My Best international striker

The Ivorian Didier Drogba – very strong in the air and packing a great shot. He is arguably the best striker in Africa right now.

My Best Zimbabwean player

I have two – Peter Ndlovu and Benjani Mwaruwari. Zimbabwe is on the international map because of these players.
