MDC-T Mayor Farai Nyandoro earlier this year indicated his interest to change the name of Lower Paradise, a new low density suburb, to Susan Tsvangirai in honour of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s late wife.
Two blocks of flats in Dombotombo would be named after Party Secretary General Tendai Biti and former District Chairperson, Potifa Bakayimana.
Council Chamber Secretary Ruramayi Nyamuzihwa last week on Tuesday read a letter of instruction from Minister Chombo’s office at a full council meeting. The letter directed all local authorities to adhere to procedures regarding naming of roads, streets and residential areas.
“All correspondence should be channeled through the Provincial Administrators’ office, Ministries of Youth, Defence, Local Government and The President’s Office.
These are the ministries that constitute the board responsible for making such approvals,” read part of the letter.
Chombo’s letter was interpreted by residents and observers as a direct threat to the MDC’s plan to honour their heroes.
“The directive is a direct blow to democracy as Chombo continues to be used as a Zanu (PF) point man. There is no way the mentioned ministries would accept the naming of such institutions after fighters of democracy. The ministries remain Zanu (PF) and are the main pillars of dictatorship. In other words Minister Chombo is simply saying to MDC, “Go to hell,” said a resident, Maxwell Mwanza.
