Cattle research compromised

Farmers who were resettled on government research station farms in Matopus are disrupting research operations by not keeping a closer eye on where their cattle graze.

Communal cattle have been allowed to mix with cows used for research purposes.

Researchers at the station said a lot of people were allocated pieces of land on the research farms under unclear circumstances.

“These people who were allocated land in the research farms have cut the perimeter fences which used to demarcate surrounding communal areas and the research farms. Cattle from the communal areas are now mixing and mating freely with our research breed thereby disrupting research activities,” said one of the researchers at the station.

The researcher said cattle, donkeys and goats belonging to the newly resettled farmers were also mixing and mating with research livestock.

“Controlled mating is very important in livestock research. This situation is unacceptable,” said another livestock expert at the station. Recently workers at the research station impounded a bull belonging to a local Zanu (PF) official who was also allocated land on one of the research farms.

“Impounded animals used to be killed and the carcass destroyed but now there is a lot of politics involved,” added another worker at the station.
