Chidzambwa’s advice

“Score an early goal and park the bus ahead of our goal,” that is the advice of former Warriors coach, Sunday Chidzambwa, who qualified Zimbabwe for their maiden appearance at the Afcon finals in 2004.

He gave this as his advice to the current technical team, led by Rahman Gumbo, ahead of the do-or-die last round qualifier against Angola in Luanda. The Warriors boast a two-goal cushion, but the away goal that Angola scored in the 3-1 Zimbabwean win left the encounter on the edge.

“The most important thing will be for us to score first in Luanda,” said Chidzambwa, now coach at South African PSL side, Black Leopards. Heis a veteran of continental club and national team football. “That will unsettle the Angolans. After that they should make sure they keep things tight at the back and if possible, park the bus in front of goal and further frustrate them. The trick will be to ensure the team (Zimbabwe) does not concede,” added the mentor, whose teams are well-known for astute defending.

While he concedes playing in Angola will not be stroll in the park, Chidzambwa was confident Zimbabwe would be among the 16 teams competing to topple reigning champions Zambia early next year.

“I have no doubt we will qualify at the expense of Angola. We have a group of highly-talented players who are motivated, and a knowledgeable technical team that can do the job. Our chances of qualifying for any Nations Cup campaign have never been this bright and I see no reason why the team cannot secure its spot in next year’s edition,” he said.
