Chiefs demand free stands

Chiefs in Zaka have demanded free housing stands at Jerera Growth Point. Chiefs Nhema, Nyakunhuwa, Bota and Ndanga said they wanted to be exempt from paying for residential stands, causing uproar at a full council meeting last Friday. Zaka Rural District Council chairman Peter Imbayarwo confirmed the reports but said council would not be bullied into dishing out free housing stands.

“It’s true that our four chiefs want to be exempt from paying for the residential stands here in Jerera but we will stick to the resolutions that were made by councilors. We are not going to give them for free but we will let them pay 60 percent of the total price. This is the directive made by the Minister of Local Government and we should stick to it,” said Imbayarwo.

The stands cost between $700 and $850 for high density areas and $1 500 for low density areas. The council also resolved during the meeting that it would repossess all stands that have not been developed for the past six years and resell them at auction.

“Some stands have been idle for over 10 years, so we will repossess them and give them to people who are able to develop them,” Imbayarwo said.
