The team will be led by Masvingo provincial administrator, Felix Chikovo, following complaints from residents that councilors were involved in illicit tender deals.
Chikovo this week confirmed that the Chiredzi town council was under probe. “The minister has ordered an investigation into the local authority following reports that councilors were involved in corrupt activities,” said Chikovo.
“Once the probe team has completed its work it will present its findings to the minister who will have the final say on the way forward,” said Chikovo.
It is alleged that councillors within the Chiredzi town council grabbed both residential and industrial stands which they later sold for a profit. It is also alleged that the councillors were awarding themselves hefty allowances at the expense of service delivery.
The town has been hard hit by serious water shortages, with some areas going for days without water. The roads are in a bad state and town fathers are allegedly not prioritizing service delivery. However, a council official this week said that it was not surprising that Chombo was targeting the MDC-T led council.
“Some of the allegations being leveled against us are totally false and we hope the probe team will do its job thoroughly,” said a council official who preferred anonymity.
