Chrome exports soar

About $2.9 billion of chromium ores and concentrates is imported globally each year. Between 2006 and 2010, world imports grew annually by 19 % in value and 10 % in quantity.

In 2010, this product contributed 1.78 % to Zimbabwe’s total exports in value and was in the top 20 of our exports. There are about 92 countries importing chromium ores and concentrates, and 62 exporting ones.

The unit value for this product varies significantly from country to country, depending on proximity to markets and product diversification.

The three largest importing countries are China, with 82 % share, Russian Federation (5.5 %) and Japan (1.6 %). South Africa is the largest exporter of this product, in value terms, for the year 2010 (with a share in world exports of 40 %), followed by Turkey (17 %).

Zimbabwe is ranked number nine of the exporting countries, with a world market share of 2.1 %. The country exported 206,025 tons worth $56.9 million in 2010. Of this China imported about 160,043 tonnes, valued at $48.2 million. Between 2006 and 2010, Zimbabwe’s exports of chrome grew in value by an average 460 % per annum, against a world average growth of 19 %.
