Dailynews editors arrested

Police yesterday detained Dailynews Group Editor Stanley Gama and Executive Deputy Editor Chris Goko on allegations of criminal defamation complaint by ex-Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe advisor, Munyaradzi Kereke.

Gama and his deputy, Goko, were interviewed for four hours at the Harare Central Police Station in the company of their lawyer, Alec Muchadehama.

Police recorded statements from the journalists before they were released.

“They (police) took us for four hours on allegations of criminal defamation. We are not intimidated, we are aware that Kereke is trying to scare us from reporting the allegations of rape against a minor but these arrests will not deter us. We will continue to report balanced and accurate stories. Telling it like it is without fear without favour,” Gama said.

Contacted for comment Harare provincial police spokesman Inspector Tedius Chibanda referred us to Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba whose mobile phone was not reachable.

Kereke already has a $45 million lawsuit pending against the newspaper for reporting allegations that he raped his 13-year-old niece in 2010.
