Father demands inquest

The father of Blessing Matanda has demanded an inquest into the death of his son who was found in a pool of blood in a police holding cell at Munyati station.

A shotgun was found beside the deceased’s body. He had been picked up by detectives in connection with shoplifting last week and was found dead the following morning. Police said they were treating the incident as a suicide.

However, the deceased’s father, Jacob, said there is more to the matter than meets the eye.

“The circumstances surrounding the death of my child are not clear. I therefore simply want an inquest into his death and I have notified police of my wish,” he said.

The 79-year-old father said he was yet to see the post-mortem report.

“The reason why I want an inquest is that I do not believe he committed suicide. Someone may have murdered him,” said the father who maintains he will not bury his child until an inquest has been completed.

“Where could he have got that gun?” asked an elderly local man who refused to be named.

Another man who said he saw Matanda on the day he was arrested, told The Zimbabwean that even if Matanda had acquired a gun, he would not know how to operate it.
